‘ORCA SING’ CONCERT DEDICATED TO PEOPLE AND WILDLIFE OF THE GULF: , June 19th, 2010 on San Juan Island Celebrates Resident Orcas in Song and Words.
The 11th annual ‘Orca Sing’ concert will be held on June 19, beginning at 6 PM, at Lime Kiln Point State Park on San Juan Island.
The concert features maestro Fred West and members of the City Cantabile Choir in a celebration in song and words for Puget Sound’s Resident Orca whales.
“This year we are dedicating this concert to the people and wildlife of the Gulf of Mexico suffering the devastation of the BP oil disaster,” said Fred West. “We invite everyone to come to enjoy the concert and to stand united to make sure a disaster like this never happens in Puget Sound.”
“We don’t drill for oil in Puget Sound or along the Washington coast,” said Kathy Fletcher of People For Puget Sound, “but every day thousands of gallons of oil and oil products cross our waterways and we must make sure spill are prevented and worst-case scenarios are planned for.”
“’Orca Sing’ is a celebration,” said Jenny Atkinson of The Whale Museum. “Bring a picnic dinner and sit overlooking the waters of Haro Strait, the summer home to our resident orca whales, to enjoy the music.”
Visitors can make a whole weekend of whale-related activities in Friday Harbor with programs and events at The Whale Museum and the San Juan Chamber of Commerce.
‘Orca Sing’ starts at 6 PM with lighthouse tours and information booths. After a Tlingit whale welcome by Odin Lonning and Orca Annie Stateler, the concert begins at 7 PM and continues to dusk. This year, bring a flashlight to light up the night in time to the music when the sun sets.
The event is free, and a suggested donation of $5 will help cover transportation cost of the choir and costs of the sound system.
Parking is extremely limited at Lime Kiln State Park. Please plan to carpool or take the bus from the ferry. For transit information go to http://www.sanjuantransit.com/
